2 Ways To Inspect Sewer Lines

Without municipal sewer lines, wastewater won't get from your house to the treatment plant. That's why it's important to make sure that the municipal sewer lines are in good shape and are in good repair. There are several ways to do that. One of the ways to do that is to have a company that does sewer inspections and repairs come to take care of the sewer lines on a regular basis. So, how do they inspect all the sewer lines, since many of them are not large enough to actually walk through?

Cameras

One way to inspect the sewer lines is to drop cameras down into the lines. These cameras are attached to fiber optic cables, which will carry the signal back from the camera to a monitor so that the people doing the inspection can watch in real-time and then mark any of the places that need to be worked on or are concerning. The nice thing about sending cameras down the sewer lines to do the work is that there are a variety of sizes, which means that sewer lines of just about any size can be easily inspected.

Robots

Pipe inspection robots are another way that sewer inspection companies can keep an eye on the various sewer pipes. These robots are generally attached to cables because getting a control signal to a robot in a sewer line underground can be problematic. The cable will allow the operator to control the robot as well as get a view of what is going on as the robot crawls along the pipe. Many of the robots have some kind of magnetic wheels on them, which means that they can crawl through the sewer lines and, if the lines are metal, they can crawl all around the pipes to get the best look possible. One added benefit of these robots is that some of them have sensors for various gasses, so they can read if there is a dangerous buildup of certain gasses in the sewer lines that could cause serious problems.

Inspecting the sewer lines used to mean people had to physically get into the pipes to check out each and every inch of them. However, it is easier to make sure that they are in good shape using cameras and robots.
