4 Tips for Passing Your Title Five Septic Inspection

If you are planning on selling your property or expanding on your property that uses a septic tank, you are going to have to pass a title five septic inspection in order to sell your property. A title five inspections ensure that your septic tank is in good working order and helps protect against unsafe private sewage systems.

If you take care of your septic system, it should be easy for you to pass the inspection. Here are some steps you can take to increase your chance of passing the septic inspection.

Don't Use Harsh Chemicals

The inspector will first test the level of bacteria inside of your septic tank to make sure the bacteria levels are correct. You need the right level of bacteria for the waste inside of your system to break down correctly.

To ensure you have the right level of bacteria in your tank, don't put bleach or other harsh cleaning products down your drains. When you need to clean your tub, sink, or toilet, use natural cleaning products, such as baking soda and vinegar, as these cleaning products will not impact the balance of bacteria in your septic tank.

Stop Using Your Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals become a go-to kitchen upgrade in the 1990s and have continued to stick around. A garbage disposal is great if you only run it once a day to get rid of the tiny food particles you can't scrape off your plates, pots, and pans. It is not great if you use it to grind-up uneaten and spoiled food because excess food scraps can clog up your drainage pipes and your septic system. Instead, put the food in the trash or compost.

Direct Water Away from Your Septic Tank

Make sure you are not directing water that comes out of your gutters and drainpipes towards your septic tank and drainage field. When your septic tank is inspected, the inspector will make sure that the drainage field is working properly. If you are flooding the drainage field with excess water, it is not going to pass the inspection.

Get Your Tank Pumped on a Regular Basis

Finally, you need to make sure you are getting your tank pumped on a regular basis. You should be getting your septic system pumped at least twice a decade, and more often if you have high water usage. If you know your septic tank will need to be inspected for a title five inspection, have your tank drained and inspected by a septic tank professional first.
